It’s well documented that I was a reading machine last Spring/Summer. I tore through The Hunger Games, Divergent books #1 and #2, the 5 available Mortal Instruments books, and 2/3 of The Infernal Devices series. Whew!
And after I finished those, I wanted more! But I decided to only start series that had already had released all the books. Nothing punches me harder in the fangirl feels than having to wait an extended amount of time for a book’s release; especially when they leave you hanging with a cliffhanger. (Looking at you, Veronica Roth!)
So, I decided on The Maze Runner. One day, I went to Barnes & Noble to use their free Wi-Fi (don’t ask), and while I was there I picked up a copy, started reading, and knocked out 7 chapters. But, I wasn’t quite hooked yet, and I rarely reached for the book again in the following months. Crazy, right? It took me about a month to get into The Infernal Devices, but nothing like with The Maze Runner. I essentially took a 6 month break!
What triggered me to pick it up again? Well, it certainly wasn’t all the news about the big screen movie adaptation that is floating around. I’m purposely avoiding all of that until I finish. I have time. Don’t worry!
What really gave me my groove back was the release of the final book in The Infernal Devices trilogy. As per usual with all the books about Cassie Clare’s Shadowhunter world, I downloaded that book to my Nook Color at midnight, and proceeded to read until I finished. No, I did not sleep that night. I’m not the speed reader some are, so it took me about 14 hours. And 14 emotionally challenging hours at that! I laughed. I cried. I cried some more. Oh, and then cried a little bit more. It was beautiful!
But, just like that, I was alllll about reading again. Even though I wasn’t completely hooked on TMR yet, I made myself read a little every day to see if I could get into it. That finally happened this week! Just yesterday, I read 10 chapters. Now I’m halfway through the book and officially invested. I hope this continues! Wish me luck!
Have you had any issues getting “into” a book? What did you do to help? Or did you just give up and start a different one?
