WordPress 2.6 Released!

The newest version of WordPress, v. 2.6, has now been officially released.

I looked at the video tour and the upgrades and additions look pretty good. Hopefully the changes made to image uploading will make like easier. I love that a caption can now be easily made. I was contemplating installing a caption plugin.

I think it’s neat that you can look back at older versions of your post and possibly restore them. I’m not sure how often I’d be able to use those, but it’s a nice option to have.

I also love the new “Press This!” feature that’s a bookmarklet, that allows you to copy text, photos, quotes, and video from external websites. It’ll reside on your toolbar. I can definitely see myself using that, except I wonder how that would work with multiple WordPress installations. I’ll have to test it out!

The Theme preview is cool, like several of plugins already available. What I’d like to see, which probably isn’t possible, is to preview a new theme — with your edits — before you allow your blog visitors to see it. Right now, I install themes, and tinker with them, on a non-public WordPress installation. When I’m satisfied with the alterations I’ve made, I copy the entire theme to the active blog and activate it. It would be neat to not have to do that, although it’s not really a necessity.

I’m 100% certain I won’t be using Gears. Actually, no I’m not. My laptop, Rafa, is painfully slow. So I may be making use of that “Turbo” feature when I’m away on business. I know, I know. I ought to just add some RAM and I do plan on doing that as well.

Right now, I’m only using 2.5.1 on 2 of my blogs and I run a LOT of them with WordPress. The main reason I refuse to upgrade the rest of them — which are still running 2.3.3 — is the widget section. I hate what 2.5+ did to them. They are hard to use and actually I can’t get them to work properly. I rely heavily on widgets on my other sites. Heavily. So, until WordPress comes back to their senses and fixes the annoyance that is their current widget section, the bulk of my installations will continue to run on 2.3.3.

I also haven’t updated because a small number of my holy grail plugins aren’t compatible with the new releases. I refuse to give them up, herego, I favor the status quo.

Why I Don’t Use Firefox

It’s not the reason you think. Trust me!

If you are a Firefox user, open it up and hit CTRL+O. Then open up IE and do the same. The difference in how each of those shortcuts works is why I don’t use Firefox.

When I worked at the Ohio State University Hospital, I was let in on this keyboard shortcut to visit websites. I became hooked and haven’t looked back! That was 6 years ago.

It’s so much easier to get to my bookmarks using that method. I visit the Oh No They Didn’t! blog on LJ a lot. I gave it the bookmark “ontd”. When I open up that broswer shortcut and start to type in ontd, press enter, and it takes me there!

Firefox unveiled their new version 3.0 today. I wonder if anything’s changed. I’ll have to check it out. I’m not holding my breath, though. I do have Firefox installed on my computer, but only to test how my work looks on other browsers. From some of the reviews I’ve read, I don’t think I’ll be making the switch on a permanent basis.

Being on the comp as often as I am — I’m a web designer — I’ve fallen into a routine. Firefox gives me the same prompt, but actually wants me to open a file, not a website. I can’t get down with that, so that is the only reason I haven’t migrated. I’m a creature of habit. So until they fix that, I will stick with IE and use AdMuncher to keep my browsing safe.

What Is Up With RapidShare’s CAPTCHA?

Stupid and annoying new RapidShare Captcha

I wish I had 30 extra minutes to try and figure out these damn captcha’s, because that’s what it takes to try and successfully download files from RapidShare these days.

You have to put in the 4 letters or numbers, out of 5 or 6, that have a graphic cat on them. The other characters have a dog on them, but the dog looks an awful lot like the cat graphic. Sound like a stupid way to validate a download? Absolutely.

And when I actually got the CAPTCHA code right (on the 4th try) the download errored out after a couple of minutes! Lately, I’ve stumbling upon RapidShare’s “Happy Hours” rather regularly. I might have to rely on those if downloading files from there. Bummer, because their download rates are superior to a lot of other download sites.

I don’t know what prompted this change, but they need to cut it out. This is not cool!

Going to Try Out Some New Things

I think I’m going to venture into the world of the “Get Paid To” sites and see what they’re all about.

Any easy way to make some extra cash sounds very appealing to me.

So I’m going to try some out, see how they work, how much they pay etc, then report back.

You never know! I could even help out some friends! ;)

Cool Site I Just Found

If you’re an internet-whore, like me, the following site may be quite helpful.

OpenTable.com was created to allow diners to book reservations at their restaurant of choice online!

I’m not a phone person and don’t use mine for much more than AIM, light internet browsing, and text messaging. I know picking up the phone and calling a restaurant doesn’t take long, but someone like me would prefer the internet. Whenever it’s possible, that’s the method I use when ordering pizza.

So take a look around, and see if OpenTable.com is for you!

There are no words

Wopla Womens Planner 2.0

I cannot believe this actually exists. It’s called the Wopla Womens Planner and it calculates when your period starts and ends. The official description states that it “is a family/sexual life planner application, which help you to organize your sexual life.”

Wow.

I guess it just proves that they have programs for everything these days, huh?

World TeamTennis Pro League?

Where have I been? I’ve never even heard of this?

Anyway, the St. Louis Aces drafted Anna Kournikova to play. This oughtta be good. She was never known for being that good a tennis player. Her forte was being attractive and drawing more male viewers into the sport. So, no one can say she wasn’t successful!
