Rants & Raves

Wading in the Wearable Tech Waters

I like to think of myself as an early-ish adopter of technology, but I’ve been dragging my feet when it comes to wearable tech.

I’ve been eyeballing various Fitbit offerings for a while, and there’s always one thing or another that I don’t like. It usually comes back to the fact that I wear an actual watch (not a smart watch), and I don’t want a bulky tracker on my wrist. That also means I won’t be wearing a smart watch, because who wants to wear two watches? Not me!

So, I stumbled upon a wearable fitness tracker that’s a RING! It tracks my activity, steps, heart rate, sleep, and syncs with an app, just like Fitbit. It will basically give me a snapshot at my day and that’s really what I want from a tracker. I don’t need instant updates or the community/social aspect that a network as large as Fitbit has. I’m not going to get into competition with anyone, and frankly, I don’t need to. I’m working on me!

This ring is called the Motiv Ring. And it sounds and looks super dope.

I Love My Super Zoom Point and Shoot Camera

I love so many things about my tech kit, but there are few things I love more than my cameras and how perfect they are for me, with the help of accessories.

No accessory was needed to display what I love about my Canon PowerShot SX 530HS camera. I’ve had it almost 2 years now and I love it more and more with each passing use. Last month, I brought it to Mason, OH to help me with the shots I took at the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament. My DSLR did very well, but even I was impressed and somewhat surprised with how tight I could get in on players and surroundings with my PowerShot.

I zoomed in suuuuper hard just to see how close I could get. You know, just for fun. Check it out!

There really isn’t a bad spot in the house on Center Court at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. It looks like I’m really far away, but it’s really not that bad. My camera was just zoomed all the way out. And yes, that’s an awning above my head. A select number of seats have the awning cover and let me tell you, it is so incredibly clutch! We could have gotten much closer seats, for the same price, but we prioritized the awning because it’s always hot and sunny as hell during those daytime sessions. Worth it.

That is Alexander “Sascha” Zverev, one of my current faves on the ATP tour. I didn’t even know he was sporting any facial hair until I looked at my pics. And obviously it is a little blurry. My camera, Agnes, has image stabilization, but she can’t perform miracles. That far zoomed in, it was hard to even keep Sascha in the frame so I could capture the shot! Still, quite impressive, no?

So, if you’re in the market for a point and shoot super zoom, I highly, highly recommend this Canon PowerShot model. It also comes in handy for concerts and other sporting events where you aren’t allowed to take in DSLRs and detachable zoom lenses. I’ve taken it to several Ohio State Football games and felt like I was right in the huddle with the team!

WiFi Solutions For Your Non-Wifi Enabled Camera

Two years ago, I bought a new DSLR camera. I named her Ethel. She was replacing my trusty Canon Rebel XT, Gertrude, which was 10 years old. It still worked fine, and took beautiful shots of my family’s trip to Hawaii earlier that year, but I decided that I was ready for an upgrade.

Since I already had several lenses in the Canon family, I was sticking with Canon. I headed to QVC and watched a ton of presentations of the Canon DSLR’s and what they were frequently offering was the T5. So, I started stalking the T5 on Amazon. I wasn’t going to go the QVC route, because I didn’t want nor need the starter lens kits they were offering with the camera body. So, I head to Amazon and look at the T5 offerings in “body only” listings. I add it to my Amazon wish list, and start hoarding Amazon gift cards from Swagbucks and PerkTV. Swagbucks even had a gift card sale on Amazon GC’s so I got even more bang for my buck!

After about two months, I notice I am almost to my goal. Then I watch QVC again and see a listing for the Canon SL1 camera. Which is a smaller body than the T5, but it has better specs. It also allows me to use the viewfinder as a touch screen. I have relatively small hands, so having an equally as powerful camera, but in a smaller package, was super attractive to me. After another two weeks of saving (because the SL1 was a little more expensive) I got my new camera body.

Let’s Discuss The New AMC Stubs Premiere Program!

amc-stubs-card-premiere

I got an email, a couple of weeks ago, informing that my existing AMC Stubs membership was about to be upgraded to AMC Stubs Premiere. I skimmed the email, but really didn’t read all that much into it.

For the past couple of years, I’ve been enjoying AMC Stubs because it waives fees from every transaction, and I get a free movie ticket after every 10 visits. There have also been some advanced screening opportunities that I’ve enjoyed. All in all, if you went to the movies once per month, you made your $12/yr investment back. That was worth it to me.

The Skinny On Free Screenings & How To Attend Them!

freebies

The Maze Runner, Let’s Be Cops, About Time, Mortdecai, Focus, Insurgent, Age of Adaline, Hot Pursuit, Entourage, Spy, Inside Out, Magic Mike XXL, Max, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.

The above list is all the movies I’ve gotten passes to, in the past year, for a free screening. If you add up all those movies (averaging $10 per) that’s a savings of about $140! That’s a lot, y’all!

I frequently tweet about screenings I attend, and get responses from followers asking how I always end up seeing all these movies for free. Well, I’m going to share, because sharing is caring, right?

Product Rave: Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate

kate_somerville_exfolikate

Every time I use Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate, I fall in love. Again.

It’s that good, folks. It only takes 2 minutes, and when I rinse it off, my skin feels so baby soft and just wonderful. Even with using my Clarisonic Mia 2, I don’t get that type of exfoliation and my skincare products go on even better. The morning after I use it, I always say “I wish I could ExfoliKate every day!” I wake up and my face always has cleared up some. Blemishes that were starting to come in, were rebuffed, and ones that were lingering have started to recede.

This particular mix of chemical and physical exfoliants is absolutely perfect for my skin. I use it 2 times per week, but I’m upping that to three. My skin can handle it and I need the extra help.

It’s seriously like magic, y’all. And for someone like me, who has problem skin, it’s a Godsend. I need ExfoliKate in my life. I started with a deluxe sample (Thanks, Sephora). From there, I bought what is referred to as the “travel size.” (It’s not what I use as a travel size. I use the aforementioned deluxe sample size for that. It stays in my travel kit.) The .5 Fl Oz size is a pretty pricey $22, but with the help of SwagBucks and Perk TV, it aint no thang every few months. I’ve had my current tube since mid-December and it’s still going strong. When it comes time to replace it, I’ll happily do so because ExfoliKate might be the first Holy Grail skincare product I’ve ever bought. For real! I’ve been experimenting with with skincare for decades. To just be finding a really, really good one now is kind of sad, but also kind of exciting!

I might just try to stack some gift cards and go for the larger sizes, like 2 oz or 5 oz. I’ve been watching QVC, in particular, like a hawk lately. The second I see either of those sizes available for Easy Pay, I’ll be alllllll over it. Easy Pay is bae. And so is Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate.
