I Did It!

When I decided I would participate in the #31WriteNow challenge, I was optimistic, but figured there’d be some bumps in the road along the way. I WAS WRONG!

I didn’t miss a single day of this challenge and easily found something to write about each day. I only scheduled posts when I knew I’d have a busy weekend. Otherwise, I typically wrote posts after midnight and had them post between 11AM and 1PM the next day. (I don’t hit publish on posts that I compose after midnight because of my blog’s readership tendencies)

Earlier this year I thought finding something to write about 2-3 times per week would be soooooo hard. Now that I’ve successfully found something to write about every day, for an entire month, I know I can find fresh content for my blog.

I’m going to take a couple of days off, but I’ll be back shortly, with some more regular posts.

Did anyone else do the #31WriteNow challenge? How did it go for you?

Heard of IFTTT? You Should Check It Out!

I don’t think I’ve pimped one of my favorite new services, IFTTT, on here yet. So now’s the time!

IFTTT stands for “If This Then That.” There are various news and social media “triggers” you can choose from, when, if your desired action happens, then another event (of your choice) will happen.

For example, if you post a tweet with a specific hashtag you determine, it will also post to Tumblr. Or, if your favorite blog posts an update, you will receive a text message. Those are just examples, but the amount of cross-posting productivity you can get done is limitless! I love playing with IFTTT, and as someone who manages a lot of fan pages, its invaluable.

But thinking outside of the social media realm, it can be very helpful in your day-to-day life. Check out the following “recipe:”

IFTTT Recipe: Send me an e-mail if there will be rain tomorrow

IFTTT can help send weather updates right to your phone!

But they’ve also integrated with services like Up by Jawbone, Withings, Belkin’s WeMo, and Philips hue. You can have your Philips Hue light automatically turn on at sunset.

IFTTT Recipe: Living room Light on at sunset

And then, if motion is detected in a room equipped with WeMo, it can send you a text alert.

IFTTT Recipe: Text me if sensor detect motion!

There are so many triggers and actions available to you. I end up finding a new recipe all the time! But here’s one that I recommend for all iDevice users who may or may not take a ton of pictures with their phones. If you don’t want to make a conscious effort to regularly back up your photos, activate the iOS Photos channels and automatically back up to DropBox, Box, Skydrive, Google Drive, and Flickr, among other choices.

Since Dropbox is my cloud service of choice, this is what I’d use:

IFTTT Recipe: iPhone Photos to Dropbox

And you can specify certain albums, whether or not it’s a screenshot, or if you used the front camera (AKA selfie mode). Pretty cool, right?

I just scratched the surface of what IFTTT can do. Check it out and see if it can help make your life a little easier!

2013 Ohio State Spring Game

It’s no secret, especially if you follow me on Twitter, that I am a huge college football fan. Gigantic. So much so, that my new followers numbers trail off after football season ends, and start picking up again, once it returns. I’m not mad. I think I’m far more interesting during football season. And apparently, the Internet agrees!

As I type this, the goodness that is college football, is on my TV. I couldn’t be happier! I don’t even care that I’m watching Minnesota football. I don’t care whose team is playing tonight. I just want to see as much of it as possible!

My team, THE Ohio State Buckeyes, get things started on Saturday, and I will be there! I don’t really care which games I attend. I just want to be in that stadium, w/ 105,000 of my closest friends, as often as possible. I love, love, love being able to go to the opener. It’s like our long, national nightmare (of no football) is over, and we are all being cured by the mighty hand of the Lord together. Was that overboard? Whatever. I don’t care. FOOTBALL’S BACK!

The 2013 US Open Is Underway!

While I didn’t make it to the Western & Southern Tournament, in Cincinnati, a couple of weeks ago, I’m still just as tuned in as I usually am come US Open time.

Even though, as of this posting, Venus Williams has bowed out, she electrified NYC with her first round upset of the #12 seeded player in the world. But that wasn’t the only story to come out of that match. Did you see her hair? Va-va-va-voom!

And she wasn’t done! For her second round match, today, this is how she wore her hair. It wasn’t enough to push her into the third round, but I’m just glad she’s still even playing. (Please don’t retire anytime soon, V!)

The next huge storyline I’ve seen so far is the surprised win by 17 year old American Victoria Duval. She upset the 11th seeded player, and former US Open Champion, Sam Stosur. It was just her 2nd US Open match ever and she’s ranked 296 in the world!

Look at the sheer bliss after her big win! You can’t replicate that type of passion! I look forward to seeing more from her!

And watch her post-match interview below…

How cute is this child? I will definitely be keeping an eye on her! The US needs girls like this, along with Sloane Stephens, to take the torch from Serena and Venus in a few years!

P.S. Can y’all believe there are only 3 days left in the #31WriteNow challenge? I have not missed a single day. Go me!

The Thing About Pre-orders…

It’s been a while since I’ve actually pre-ordered anything, but I’ve always had a few gripes with the process. I just think it could be implemented better.

I know the idea is to lock in a certain price, ahead of time, and also, so you don’t have to worry about it as the date draws near. Your method of payment isn’t charged until your pre-ordered items are actually shipped, but that’s not good enough for me.

The only things I would pre-order would be a DVD, CD, or book. (Maybe some limited edition makeup. Wait, do they even offer that? Never mind.) Those items are typically very easy to lay hands on, in a store, and typically don’t cost more than $30, at the extreme high end. In short, I don’t need to pre-order any of those items. It’s not like those prices are going to sky-rocket or I’ll forget I want to buy something. Nope. Not possible. If I’m considering pre-ordering a product, I’ll still want it in a few months, when it actually becomes available.

If I’m pre-ordering, I’d like some options. No. 1, give me the option to pay when I’m pre-ordering. There have been countless times where I hear about pre-ordering and I have the funds in hand, but when the item is released, it’s not in the budget. I’d like to go ahead and have the money taken from my account, when I pre-order, so I truly can forget about it. If I pre-order, and forget, then I’m cutting things close, or messing up my finances when my card gets charged. I’d like to avoid that. Bottom line, I’d like to have an option on a per item basis.

And what if pre-ordering had a type of layaway option? This goes along the lines of my “charging when you pre-order” suggestion. Say there’s a big ticket item set to release around the holidays. Wouldn’t it be neat if you could “pre-order” and pay a certain amount, in increments, towards your order? And whatever you might have left on release day, would be all that was charged to your card? That sounds like a good plan to me!

Do these options actually exist? I mean, it has been a long time since I’ve pre-ordered anything. So, if they do, I’d be the last to know. But if they don’t, I wish they could. I know the cost of implementing something like I’m suggesting is probably why there aren’t options like this, but I’m just brainstorming here. Work with me!

What about you? Are y’all happy with the pre-order process? What, if any, changes would you like to see?
