Did I Forget How To Read?

I don’t mean literally, of course, but I am asking the question aloud because I haven’t read a full book in a year!

How on earth did this happen? I have no idea. I have many titles on my Kindle, yet they (as well as my Kindle itself) are collecting dust. I know I pledged to “read like a normal person,” and not simply inhale everything in one sitting, but I seem to have gone from one extreme to the other!

I don’t really do New Year’s Resolutions, but let me say this: I am going to get my reading swag back!

I’m going to start by finally finishing Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy, by Cassandra Clare. She initially released these stories one “chapter” per month, piece meal style. And somewhere, 2-3 parts before the end, I just trailed off. I didn’t suddenly get busy or lose interest, I just stopped reading. And then several other books were released that I had pre-ordered. They were delivered to my Kindle, where they remain.

So, I am going to get back to reading. I don’t have a number or anything, but I’m going to read regularly again. Reading is a nice escape, and now, more than ever, I think we all need that escape from the real world! I’ll check back in with everyone in a couple of months to let y’all know how things are going!

Another YA Week Of Happiness!

divergent

Every so often, there comes a week when there are so many goodies happening with my YA book fandoms, that I just can’t seem to wipe a smile off my face. This is one of those weeks!

Last night, The Maze Runner official movie poster and first trailer made its debut. After I finished reading The Hunger Games trilogy, and as much of the Divergent, The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series as was available at the time, I took more recommendations from my Tumblr family on what to read next. They told me to pick up The Maze Runner trilogy and I did. I also chose the series because it was 100% completed.

I’ve posted before that I hate getting into a series only to have to wait a year or two for the next book to be released. (Looking at you, Veronica Roth and Cassandra Clare!) So The Maze Runner checked all those boxes. There was even an available prequel book, which I finished reading about a month ago.

So, I was all set for the first trailer to finally grace us with its presence! That day ended up being yesterday and oh boy, am I pumped! I figured the trailer would be shown before the Divergent movie (and it still might), so last night was a treat.

The Divergent movie opens later this week and I will be seeing it twice this weekend. Once on Thursday with my brother, and again on Saturday with my friend Shannen. Both of my tickets (and my brother’s) are free, thanks to Viggle, Swagbucks, and Shopkick. I’m tellin y’all. If you’re not taking advantage of these programs, you’re missing out! (Well, except for Viggle.)

So yes. I’m excited about this week! I’m up to my armpits in Divergent news, pictures, interviews, and hype. The red carpet premier is tonight! And I’ve also done my fangirl duty with The Maze Runner trailer as well. I put the first leaked version of it on my Tumblr, and created a handful of GIF sets to please the Gladers.

Ahh, my book life is good.

Walking In A YA Wonderland

The Mortal Instruments Official Movie Posters

The past couple of months have been quite eventful in the land of all my young adult literature fandoms. My cup runneth over, y’all! I’ve pretty much in nonstop super fangirl mode for the past week. So many exciting announcement and reveals are happening!

Let me give you the rundown right quick!

1. The Hunger Games started its own official Instagram account. Check it out: instagram.com/thehungergames! On there, they’ve begun hinting that something is going to go down on May 14th. Eeeekkk!

2. Continuing the Instagram theme, The Mortal Instruments’ Instagram page was teasing official character posters all week. We got to see Simon, Valentine, and Magnus Bane’s posters. So exciting!

3. Over in Divergent land, a lot was happening as well! Veronica Roth revealed the cover art for the final book in the trilogy, Allegiant, on the Today Show. It comes out on October 22nd and I can’t wait!

4. Keeping it in Divergent-land, it looks like the sequel is already in the works! Deadline Hollywood reported that Brian Duffield had signed on to write the script for Insurgent, the second book in the trilogy. This is an extremely good sign as Divergent has only been filming for a few weeks! What a vote of confidence!

5. Divergent isn’t the only one of my beloved series to get the greenlight towards a sequel movie adaptation, though. In Cannes, it was just announced that The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes (book #2) is being put into production and will begin shooting later this year.

6. The Mortal Instruments‘ prequel series, The Infernal Devices, also has a script in the works. This news didn’t break in the past week, but it’s still fresh enough in my mind to make me include it in this post! Oh yeah!

7. And lastly, let me tell you about the most recent book I’ve read, The Maze Runner. Filming is set to get underway on Monday, in New Orleans. Some really amazing concept art has bee premiered by Entertainment Weekly. It was even more detailed and chilling than I even imagined it! Now, I’m not paying too much attention to the cast and production of the movie just yet because I’m not done reading the series. I still have to start/finish The Scorch Trials, The Death Cure, and prequel book, The Kill Order. I’d rather do so while creating the characters in my own head. Then, I’ll re-read the series later after getting up-to-speed with movie filming.

Sooooooo, that’s why I’ve been smiling ear-to-ear this week! The worlds I escape to, when real life is just too much, had a lot happen recently and it really brightened my spring!

I Got My Reading Swagger Back!

The_Maze_Runner_cover

It’s well documented that I was a reading machine last Spring/Summer. I tore through The Hunger Games, Divergent books #1 and #2, the 5 available Mortal Instruments books, and 2/3 of The Infernal Devices series. Whew!

And after I finished those, I wanted more! But I decided to only start series that had already had released all the books. Nothing punches me harder in the fangirl feels than having to wait an extended amount of time for a book’s release; especially when they leave you hanging with a cliffhanger. (Looking at you, Veronica Roth!)

So, I decided on The Maze Runner. One day, I went to Barnes & Noble to use their free Wi-Fi (don’t ask), and while I was there I picked up a copy, started reading, and knocked out 7 chapters. But, I wasn’t quite hooked yet, and I rarely reached for the book again in the following months. Crazy, right? It took me about a month to get into The Infernal Devices, but nothing like with The Maze Runner. I essentially took a 6 month break!

What triggered me to pick it up again? Well, it certainly wasn’t all the news about the big screen movie adaptation that is floating around. I’m purposely avoiding all of that until I finish. I have time. Don’t worry!

Love the New Barnes & Noble “Read Forever” Ad

If you take a look around the internet, you’ll see 2 distinct camps, with regards to reading: a) The techies that are all about e-readers & think everyone else lives in the stone age and b) the traditionalists who look down upon e-reader crowd saying things like “I like to feel the page turns”.

It’s really unfortunate, and that’s why I absolutely adore the new Barnes & Noble Nook commercial, titled “Read Forever”!

If you prefer one reading medium over the other, that’s great! In my opinion, if one of them gets someone, who otherwise wouldn’t be reading, to read, then shouldn’t we all be celebrating that rather than engaging in a flame war?

I’m one of those e-reader people. I adore Lula Mae, my Nook Color, and I wouldn’t have read a single page from a book this year if it weren’t for her. Physically turning a page, or folding the corner over to bookmark, doesn’t mean a thing to me. I’m thankful for e-readers, because they got me to read!

I don’t look down upon those who prefer actual books. I’m just glad that when people talk about specific books or what I’m reading, I actually have an answer!

So, the B&N Nook ad provides a bit of a a Kumbaya moment, right? Even Kindle owners are co-signing in approval. And speaking of the Kindle, read on to see Amazon’s decidedly different ad approach to the battle.
