Not Impressed with Barnes & Noble’s Pre-Order Process

McKayla Maroney is not impressed with Nook

I got an assist from Olympic gymnast, McKayla Maroney for this post. As I’ve stated before, I’m not the biggest fan of how pre-orders go down in today’s marketplace. That was reinforced Monday night, as I had to wait over 9 hours for my pre-ordered book to finally download onto my Nook Color.

When books from Cassie Clare or Veronica Roth are released (at midnight), I immediately download them and start reading. My tradition is that I don’t even go to sleep those nights. I just keep reading until I finish and then I crash. Yes, I am a binge reader.

So a wrench was thrown into my plans when midnight came and went, Tuesday, and I didn’t have Allegiant on my Nook Color. I refreshed. I logged out. I turned my device off and back on. I did everything I could think of, but the book would not download.

After an hour, I was desperate. I was able to start reading it on my desktop computer, which is so unnatural. I want to be wrapped up in blankets, in my bed, so I can get lost in the story. But noooooooo!

The Backup Power Business Is Booming!

backup-batteries

I wrote about my desire to purchase portable backup power for my tech toys (mostly my iPhone) a few months ago. I made an impulse QVC buy and got a portable charger, which I later sent back. I liked the idea, but realized I could get a much better deal on Amazon.

After another month or so of shopping, comparing prices, and using SwagBucks to earn a ton of Amazon e-Gift cards, I finally made a decision and ended up with not one, but TWO portable power packs. I got a smaller capacity charger, from Intocircuit, which has found a permanent home in my purse. With 5000 mAh at my disposal, it should fully charge my iPhone about 2 times. Lord help me if I’m just out and about, around town, and I need more than 2 charges!

Then, for more heavy duty tasks, such as charging my Nook Color, or a friend/family member with a phone that needs some juice, I also bought an Anker 10,000 mAh pack. We had a lot of power outages last year, and I was always debating when I’d have to resort to driving somewhere, just so I could recharge my devices. So, that’s the biggest reason I got the big guy.

My Mom, Aunt, & I are planning another trip to the Western & Southern Open, in Cincinnati, in the next 2 weeks. We went back in 2009 and saw Roger Federer defeat Andy Murray in the semifinals. We want to see Venus and Serena before they retire, so we’re going to try and see them this time around.

I’m on the mailing list, for that tournament, ever since then. Reading the latest update on the 2013 edition of the tourney, I scrolled down to a section that immediately grabbed by attention!

Smartphone running out of juice?

The text that follows announces that if you visit a specific tent, on the grounds, you can rent a mobile phone charger for either $7 or $9 per day.

WOW! Have times changed or what?

Shopkick App Will Change How You Shop!

I finally hit a wall in my #31WriteNow challenge. I figured it would happen eventually. I mean, let’s be real. I sometimes go weeks, even months, without posting! And now I’m trying to publish a post every single day? HA! What was I thinking?! I mean, there are a million thoughts that go through my mind on a daily basis, so how hard should this really be?

Well, have no fear! My iPhone sent me a notification from a new app that I am currently obsessed with, and I’ve decided to talk about that today!

Shopkick

Now, if you haven’t taken a look around my blog in a while, then you probably haven’t seen my “How I Monetize” page. I spend a lot of time on the Internet and might as well use some of that time to make some money. It doesn’t seem like much, at first glance, but it adds up! I’m serious!

So, let me tell you about Shopkick. The app, available for both iPhone and Android, awards you points (known as “kicks”) just for walking in certain stores. Yes, that’s it! Say you were just going to Target to look around. I know I can’t be the only person who does this multiple times per week. And if I am, don’t judge me!

You can get even more “kicks” if you scan bar codes of specific items. And then, even more if you actually make a purchase in-store.

Anyway, those kicks add up and get you gift cards to retailers like Target, Best Buy, Starbucks, Fandango, Macy’s, iTunes, Papa John’s, Old Navy, Sephora, Lowe’s, and more! I’ve used the app on 3 separate days, and I’m already about halfway to getting a Fandango gift card! So, as you can see, kicks add up quickly, if you’re close to a lot of stores.

Intrigued? You should be. Shopkick is a well-designed and highly functional app. Try it, and let me know how you like it!

How Much Backup Power Do You Keep With You?

20130516-001323.jpg

It’s no secret that I’m an iPhone addict. I am always on my phone doing something. Whether that’s checking Twitter or taking pics/video, it’s always something!

A late night channel surfing stop on QVC (I know, I know) had me purchasing the Halo Starlight charger late last month. The presentation was great, and buying backup power for my baby is super practical! Not to mention that, should I ever take the plunge and switch to Android, my Halo charger would charge that phone as well, as well as any iPod I may own in the future. (I’ve been thinking about possibly jumping to Galaxy S4 w/ an iPod touch on the side)

But I didn’t stop there. I snagged a deal from Eversave for an iPhone charger case. I had had a referral, so the full price of the retail $75 case ended up being about $9. Then I remembered that I had a really cheap backup charger from Digipower that the salesman from Radio Shack gave me free, when I upgraded to my current phone. It looks like this product.

So, right now, I’m in the middle of some heavy duty testing!

Video: Fangirl Fun – My current iPhone Wallpaper

Some people go out on the weekends and do wild & crazy things. Not me. I sit at my computer and tinker with my iPhone. After all the Hunger Games: Catching Fire portraits came out last week, I was whipped into a fangirl frenzy! Y’all know that’s my movie (and books)! I wanted to use each and every one of the 11 portraits as my iPhone wallpaper, but how annoying would it be to switch to a new one every day? And a collage would make the images so small that it wouldn’t even be worth my time.

So, what did I do? I took advantage of my iPhone being jailbroken and made a custom wallpaper theme that randomly rotates through all the portraits with a new one appearing every 10 seconds. Pretty sweet, huh?
