Is Maybelline’s Coral Burst a dupe for NARS’ Taj Mahal?

Is Maybelline's Coral Burst a dupe for NARS' Taj Mahal? You be the judge!

I’ve been browsing some of my favorite beauty blogs and saw posts about Maybelline’s new Color Goes Electric Collection (Limited Edition for Fashion Week Spring 2013!) for Spring 2013. Having recently been obsessed with the Color Sensational Vivids lipsticks, I was surprised to see that the line includes a baked blush that I actually would buy/wear. A drugstore blush! I’m a NARS girl when it comes to blush. I need vibrant and super pigmented shades. Everything else I’ve tried has either not shown up or requires the patience of Job in order to build up enough color. I’m not about that life. Even my Bare Minerals blushes don’t really show up.

So, needless to say, when I see a bright orange blush at a drugstore, I take notice. I had to go a few places in order to track it down, but I eventually found it at Meijer.

I had done some searches on Twitter and someone wondered if Coral Burst could be a dupe for NARS’ Taj Mahal. I happen to have that blush. As a matter of fact, it was the first blush I ever bought and it is my holy grail. It’s close, but I’m not an expert on dupes, so I’ll let y’all decide.

I haven’t worn Coral Burst yet, so I can’t speak to its application of my face, but I swatched it on my fingers and the back of my hand. It takes more product to get the same amount of color as one swipe from NARS. That doesn’t surprise, because NARS pigment is serious, but it was still a much better color payoff than any other blush I had tried.

Take a look for yourself to see if you’d characterize Coral Burst as a dupe for Taj Mahal.

Knee Jerk: Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam Foundation

20120217-005358.jpg

I’ve been curious about this product since I first saw it. Well, to be fair, I learned of the Revlon version (PhotoReady Airbrush Mousse Makeup) first, but after reading so many negative reviews of it (especially for us oily skinned chicas), I decided to pass. Then I heard there was a Maybelline version, called Dream Nude Airfoam Foundation.

Naturally I gravitated towards the Revlon version since they have just owned me lately. That includes their Colorstay Liquid Makeup, which I’ve been using exclusively, in terms of base foundation, for the past year and a half. But hearing the Revlon Airbrush foundation had sparklies immediately turned me off. No, it doesn’t mean there are big chunks or anything, but those don’t look the best on those of us who tend to get oily. I, for one, sometimes end up looking like a shiny penny. Don’t need to add sparkles to that! But aside from that, I also ready other reviews and pretty much none of them came off that impressed, so I didn’t even bother. Maybe some day I will, but it’s not likely.

So, I read and watched a few reviews from women of color (I usually look to them first) and they were surprisingly favorable. So, I decided once I got my hands on some coupons, I’d give it a shot!

Knee Jerk: Maybelline SuperStay 14 Hr Lipstick

20120104-011441.jpg

This is a quick post to share my thoughts on Maybelline’s new SuperStay 14 Hr Lipstick. Before I get started, let me just say that I won’t be switching my allegiance to Maybelline from Revlon.

I was walking through Walmart looking for a specific shade of Revlon’s Lip Butters (I’m still obsessed) and spotted a Maybelline display with new products. I read about them, before-hand, so I knew what they were. I haven’t tried their StainGloss yet due to some negative reviews I’ve read. (The idea is really cool!) But I probably will as curiosity shall get the best of me!

Let me rundown the things I loved:

  • The color. I picked Ravishing Rouge, which was a bright red. I lucked out because you can’t really tell from the packaging what shade you’re getting.
  • The application. It went on really smooth!
  • The color payoff. Very pigmented. So, if you’re looking for a toned-down look, these may not be for you.

These are kind of like my beloved Revlon Ultimate Liquid Lipstick in that you should let them set for a couple of minutes, then you’re good to go. I only had it on for a little while, but I started drinking some pop, and there was very little transfer. More than the Revlon lippie I just mentioned, but not much at all.

I want to say that these could last 14 hours, but I’d be lying because I wasn’t able to test it that long. Let me tell you why…

Quick Review: Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor

I’ve been reading some reviews of Maybelline’s Color Sensational Lipcolor around the internet, so my interest was piqued a little. I hadn’t tried a new makeup product in a while, so I figured I’d give it a shot.

I’m not “all in” on this, and let me explain why.

First, the color selection leaves much to be desired for women of color. There’s a handy little Shade Finder, that includes shades for women with a darker skin tone as well as light and medium. And then it breaks it down further into Naturals, Pinks, Plums, and Reds. Sounds like a great setup, right? Not so much.

I took a look at the selections for Dark skin tones and picked out the ones I thought would compliment my skin tone. I’m not what I’d consider light-skinned. But I’m also not really dark. I’d say I’m a medium in the chocolate spectrum; think Gabrielle Union 😉 I picked out Plum Paradise (Plums) and Get Nutty (Naturals).

I tried Get Nutty because it was what looked like the darkest available Natural available. All it did was make my lips the exact same color as the rest of my face. It was really weird because it looked like it’d give me a little reddish tint. It did not. Disappointed.

CVS BOGO Extravaganza!

Because I’m such an old lady (no jokes, please!), I set some time aside on Sundays to look through the retail ads in the paper. Aint nuttin’ wrong with lookin’ for a deal, yo!

Anyway, flipping through the CVS circular, I saw a bunch of cosmetics BOGO deals.

If you need anything from the Revlon Beyond Natural line, some L’Oreal Lipcolor, or any Maybelline Face, Eye, Lip or Nail Color, get your booty on over to CVS this week and hook yourself up!

Cover Girl is not included. They almost never do BOGOs; even though they too sliced prices for this week. Doesn’t matter to me as I found great deals on my Outlast lip color on eBay.

I’m not sure I need anything now, but I might take a little trip over to CVS to see if anything jumps out at me! Maybe a couple more L’Oreal Infallible lip glosses. We’ll see!
