Fox Sports 1

I’ve been saying for a while that ESPN needs some major network competition. I’m really sick of 90% of what that network is all about and stands for. I was glad to hear that FOX was launching their own 24/7 sports network, but I wasn’t about to hold my breath. I’m still not, but I’ve been following their hires and the news leading up to the debut anyway. Basically, my expectations for the network are incredibly low, that way, if it actually ends up being a success, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s a self-defense mechanism and it works for me somehow.

My ears perked up when I heard Fox Sports 1 had hired Andy Roddick. I love that guy. I think his personality will be great for sports media. At least I hope it is. I’m sure he’ll be rusty to start things off, but most analysts and personalities are.

I rolled my eyes when they announced they hired one of college football’s greatest trolls in Clay Travis. Really, guys? You couldn’t find anyone credible? You had to hire on a TMZ-esque wannabe Mark May? Good job. Good effort.

But FS1 really got my attention when I learned they hired Michelle Kwan for their 2014 Olympic coverage. Slam dunk, y’all! Michelle Kwan is everything, I tell you. EVERYTHING! As a fan of figure skating, I can’t wait to see what she brings to the table! They’re going to have her do more human interest and fluff pieces, rather than standard reporting, as I understand it, but I’m still happy about the move. I’m an Olympics junkie (more for the Summer Games than the Winter Games), so FS1 gives an e-high five from me.

I’ll be watching the launch when it takes place in 2 weeks. Even if the network doesn’t end up being a hit, it’s shiny and brand new right now. Sports fans like just about everything when it’s shiny and brand new. So, let the games begin!
