Women’s Shorts Are Having A Moment at the 2018 Australian Open

Long time no see, right?

Well I was summoned from my fall/winter slumber by fashion; women’s sports fashion at that.

A few years ago, you only saw one athlete on the WTA Tour wearing shorts during their tennis matches. That was Victoria Azarenka. And sis was working those shorts too. After a match between Serena and Vika, Vika said she’d get Serena a pair of shorts since Serena kept complimenting her pair.

Now, just a couple of years later, errrrrybody is rocking shorts! Nike and Adidas both got the memo and I am so here for it! Adidas even seems to have given the ladies culottes. (Does anyone else call them that? I never called them skorts. My mama called them culottes, so I call them culottes)

Serena Williams & The Quest For 23 Majors

My attempt at making my post titles sound like Harry Potter movies. What do you think? ?

Are any of y’all tennis fans? Were you paying attention to the Australian Open the past two weeks? Well I was, even though it took a toll on my sleeping patterns.

As the draws started to take shape, there were some amazing story line lines unfolding. Both number one seeds were upset early, and some great underdogs emerged.

Then we all started to look ahead. Could it be? Could it truly happen? Could we really be so blessed to end up with an all-Williams final on the women’s side and a Roger vs. Rafa final on the men’s? A vintage set of championship matches we thought we saw the last of a decade ago.

The 2013 US Open Is Underway!

While I didn’t make it to the Western & Southern Tournament, in Cincinnati, a couple of weeks ago, I’m still just as tuned in as I usually am come US Open time.

Even though, as of this posting, Venus Williams has bowed out, she electrified NYC with her first round upset of the #12 seeded player in the world. But that wasn’t the only story to come out of that match. Did you see her hair? Va-va-va-voom!

And she wasn’t done! For her second round match, today, this is how she wore her hair. It wasn’t enough to push her into the third round, but I’m just glad she’s still even playing. (Please don’t retire anytime soon, V!)

The next huge storyline I’ve seen so far is the surprised win by 17 year old American Victoria Duval. She upset the 11th seeded player, and former US Open Champion, Sam Stosur. It was just her 2nd US Open match ever and she’s ranked 296 in the world!

Look at the sheer bliss after her big win! You can’t replicate that type of passion! I look forward to seeing more from her!

And watch her post-match interview below…

How cute is this child? I will definitely be keeping an eye on her! The US needs girls like this, along with Sloane Stephens, to take the torch from Serena and Venus in a few years!

P.S. Can y’all believe there are only 3 days left in the #31WriteNow challenge? I have not missed a single day. Go me!

WTA Needs to Redo Rankings Formula

We all saw this go down today.

Serena Williams hoisting another Grand Slam trophy. Ho Hum. This happens most of the time. Pretty much any time the surface isn’t clay. She’s won 3 of the past 4 slams and still isn’t #1.

< begin rant >That ‘title’, which no one agrees with, still belongs to Dinara Safina, who got killed in the semi’s by Venus. I mean, it was an ol’ fashioned ass-whoopin’ if you ask me. The number 1 player in the world isn’t supposed to lose matches 6-1, 6-0. She’s also supposed to have won a Grand Slam tournament at some point in her career.

I know how she got to #1, and I’ve blogged about this before, but I just can’t get behind how the points determine the rankings. So what if she “won Rome and Madrid”. Those are warm-up tournaments that not everyone competes in. She needs to be able to get it done on the big stage as well. There needs to be some sort of update to the formula, because it’s majorly flawed.

“If you hold three Grand Slam titles, maybe you should be No. 1, but not on the WTA Tour, obviously. I see myself as No. 2. That’s where I am. I think Dinara did a great job to get to No. 1. She won Rome and Madrid.”

OH SNAP! You tell ’em, Serena!

We all know who the real #1 women’s tennis player in the world is. It’s Serena Williams (not Dinara Safina), and it’s not even close. < / end rant >

Is This Chick Serious?

I reluctantly watched Venus Williams lose yesterday on ESPN2. It was a re-airing of her match, and I had already ruined the result for myself. However, since I like to catch as much tennis as possible, I continued to watch.

When they would cut away to show other matches or news from around Roland Garros, is when I’d pay the most attention. They started talking about this young player on the tour who is extremely loud while she plays.

I thought, “loud”? What’s that supposed to mean? Is she yelling at the chair ump like McEnroe, psyching herself up in between points, or is she a grunter a la Maria Sharapova? Turns out she’s a grunter and makes Maria sound like a church mouse in comparison. I had to investigate!
