Sammy Prahalis Drafted 6th Overall; Headed to Phoenix

I shocked the world when I posted that WNBA post last week. Yes, the entire world. Well, I hope y’all are ready because I’m going to do it again! It’s follow-up time!

The WNBA Draft was held Monday afternoon, and my girl, Sammy Prahalis, was the 6th selection by the Phoenix Mercury. And she looked fab!

I am definitely jealous Phoenix fans right now. While I’ve been spoiled by easily being able to see Sammy play, they are now get to enjoy the massive swagger of Styles P for the forseeable future. Enjoy it!

P.S. A friend and I have already circled the date when the Mercury head to the Midwest and play the Indiana Fever. Don’t be surprised if we make that short road trip to Indy to check her out.

P.P.S. Check out the highlight video she just uploaded. You’ll understand why I love what she brings to the women’s game.

This Is A WNBA Post

2012 WNBA Draft

I know, I know. Don’t fall over in shock. You read that right. I am here, today, to talk about the WNBA. And why? Because my favorite women’s college hoops players is draft eligible and I plan on following/supporting her career where she is drafted.

I am talking about Sammy Prahalis, of course. Y’all know I stan for her.

Ideally, I’d like for the LA Sparks to draft her. Why?

1. They have Candace Parker already, whom I’ve loved for years.

2. They drafted Sammy’s former Ohio State teammate, Jantel Lavender, last year. Reuniting those two, would be something I’d truly enjoy. They already have tons of on-court chemistry.

3. I watched enough Sparks games to know that that team is in dire need of a point guard. Sammy would be perfect!

But, the Sparks have the first pick, and Sammy isn’t home run pick for the overall lottery pick. That honor likely goes to Stanford’s Nnemkadi Ogwumike. Will Sammy still be available the next time the Sparks pick? I doubt it, but trades happen all the time. She could honestly go anywhere from #2 to #15.

All I really want is to be able to go see Sammy play, in person, from time to time. Preferably when/if her team plays the Indiana Fever. I would also die if she ended up rejoining Team USA and represent our country in International tourneys.

The 2012 WNBA Draft takes place on April 16th @ 2:00 PM (ET). You can watch Round 1 on ESPN2, while the 2nd and 3rd rounds will air on ESPNU and NBA TV. (ESPN3 is an option as well)

So, good luck to Sammy!

CP3 Suits Up Sunday!

Candace Parker alerted the masses when she started practicing with the Sparks again. She said afterwards that they were going to play everything by ear in regards to when she’d suit up on gameday.

Well, that question has been answered. Candace tweeted that she’s going to play this Sunday when the Sparks host the Phoenix Mercury. There’s a corresponding press release on the team’s website as well.

Don’t expect CP3 to be on the court for he entire game. This is going to be a process. But her return will definitely be a welcome boost to the team’s production. Unfortunately, the game airs at 9:30PM NBA TV (for those of us not in the greater Los Angeles area), a channel that I do not get. Otherwise I would be watching!

And despite not having even played yet this season, Candace is 5th in WNBA All-Star Game fan voting. Amazing, right?

Can I Talk About Candace Parker Again?

CP3 showing off her best-selling jersey

CP3 showing off her best-selling jersey

Yea, because if you said no, I was still going to rave about my girl anyway. So there!

Anyway, Candace proved that she is a force in women’s basketball. First, in April, she leads her team to a 2nd consecutive NCAA Championship. Then she’s selected as the lottery pick in the WNBA draft, which takes her to the LA Sparks. She starts settings records. Then she is selected to the 2008 Olympic Team and got a gold medal out of that excursion.

Are y’all keepin up with me?

She gets back and picks up right where she left off, which earned her the WNBA Rookie of the Year and MVP awards for the 2008 season. This is the first tim ever that a rookie has been named the league’s MVP. It’s a big friggin’ deal, people. The only thing she didn’t get in the 2008 calendar year is a WNBA Championship. The San Antonio Silver Stars eliminated the Sparks from the playoffs. Oh, and Candace has the best selling WNBA jersey.

*whew* Time for a well-deserved vaca, Candace. You’ve had a helluva year, mama!

S/O: The LA Sparks are promoting something called “Candace’s Corner”, which looks like a fan club for her. For your $599 contribution, you get a seat in Section 113 — which is designated Candace’s Corner — for every Sparks home game. You’ll get a special Meet and Greet session with Candace, a t-shirt, a picture with Candace on the STAPLES Center floor, and more. Sounds cool. I might be all about that if I were in the L.A. area. Actually, no I wouldn’t. My uncle is on the Lakers coaching staff. I’d make him hook a sista up. Not gonna lie.

IF YOU HAVEN’T JOINED THE CANDACE PARKER FANLISTING, GET TO IT!

My Girl Candace Scrappin’ in the D

Candace Parker had a great week! She won 2 ESPY Awards and got a ton of face time during the telecast. That’s more like it, ESPN!

But the sentiment went from celebratory to “WTF” real quick up in Detroit. Apparently there was a chick fight in the closing seconds of the LA Sparks’ win over the Detroit Shock tonight.

Behold a snippet from an AP wire report:

Parker was one of three players ejected along with Detroit assistant coach Rick Mahorn after an ugly scuffle with 4.6 seconds left in Los Angeles’ 84-81 victory…

The skirmish started moments after Parker and Detroit’s Cheryl Ford had to be separated after Ford fouled Parker.

On the next possession, Parker got tangled up with Detroit’s Plenette Pierson and fell to the ground. As she was getting up, Pierson intentionally ran into her, setting off the melee.

Parker threw a punch at Pierson before being tackled by Detroit’s Deanna Nolan. Players and coaches from both teams joined in, and Mahorn knocked Lisa Leslie to the court at one point.

Apparently Candace was fouled hard once, then a second time, and had had enough and decided to fight back, throwing the 1st punch. Cue the music to Brooke Valentine’s “Girlfight”.

< sarcasm >And who says women’s sports aren’t exciting? < / sarcasm >

This does not diminish my girl crush on Candace. Just because she’s a rookie and “the face’ of the league doesn’t mean she should act like a doormat. I’m glad she stood up for herself. She’ll be tearin’ it up again — scoring baskets and playing killer defense — soon enough. With the Olympic break coming up, plus whatever suspension she receives, it’ll probably be a minute before we see her on court with the Sparks again. Thanks goodness she’s on the Olympic roster. Hopefully none of those haters are on the team too. Can you say “awkward”?

Go on brush your shoulders off, CP3!
